One day a donkey owned by the philosopher Juan Buridan (which is why it is called the Donkey of Buridan) was perishing of hunger and thirst. It had on one side a large amount of oats and on the other side a bucket of water. The donkey can never know whether he is thirsty or hungry. The donkey could not decide to eat or drink. In this horrible hesitation he was surprised by death.
